Another Day to Get Your Wing On

I was thinking about art the other day.  I certainly haven’t practiced much since college. I fell into the web development thing straight out of school. I’ve worked for businesses and universities I never would have been accepted into with co-workers on either side of the globe. Looking back with a bit of perspective on the last five years, I’d say It took me three years to get good with four or so computer languages and I’m thinking it’ll likely take me five to get good with painting. I figure at least a year in warm up to get it back and year of serious study. It’ll take a lifetime to try and master it, if I’m lucky. I like the perspective idea of a career that I’ll never want to retire from. I also like the fact that paintings are built to last as I’m often working on upgrades for software that isn’t even a year old. And mostly I feel like I’ve got all the time in the world to practice even though today I worked from 6:30 this morning until after 6:00pm this evening almost non stop, in front of a computer screen, which left very little time for anything else. However, I use some of the aesthetics from art school in web design and with code, coloring is key for me. I tell folks all the time that the only reason I learned to read and write code quickly is because I’ve spent hours color coding my text editor themes. Anyhow, I’ll make the time. I’ve put up this site just for it and I’ll keep my other randomness on http://dev.gzet.net. I’ve have had a chance to start taking some images and make some preliminary drawings. My first subject is Benne. He’s famous round these parts and helps with the tractor. I think he’s in his late seventies and one day last summer I went out to work with him so that I could learn how to operate the tractor and seed the fields. Needless to say, he’s certainly proof that age isn’t anything but a number as he could have literally worked circles around me. His enthusiasm for life is priceless and his euphemisms are superb. Anyhow, I will be doing a series of drawings and preliminary study paintings for each final painting and I’ve just started the first of them last week. I’ll put them up as soon as I figure out how to photograph the drawings properly, or at least adequately. Until then.. may the force be with you and get your wing on.
