Studio
Early last year I started thinking about remodeling our den into an office space1. It was mostly inspired by me perusing the /r/battlestations and /r/workstations sub-Reddits2. It was also an effort to integrate my computers into our living space so that I could use it to preview work. I think part of the inspiration came from when I had a client over to the house. It felt odd taking them upstairs to my upstairs office which was a bit invasive into our personal space.
Our house has a living room and a den. We rarely used the den and it originally had a pool table in it which we donated to a local church. At one point I had an easel and art supplies on top of the pool table, but I rarely used them either. If you look at my notes1 on it, you can see the original sketches for the setup, cabinetry, and wiring. There isn’t a single wire showing anywhere. I enjoy the planning as much as anything and I had also originally considered building the cabinetry myself.
It’s finally taking shape after a little over a year. It wouldn’t have been such a priority, but a tree landed on our house last fall and the renovation upstairs is pushing the better half into my old office. We’re calling the whole thing Project 20253. It’ll also give me the ability to pull Iris, or dog, into the den while the workers come and go upstairs. We’ve still got a bit to go on the renovations, but we hope to have them completed this summer. Best thing so far is that I can let Iris in and out while I’m still at my desk.
I’m also now switching from calling it an ‘office’ and are using ‘studio’ instead. It just sounds more creative and that seems more fun. After all, I do have degrees in art and who wants to work in an office? And to top off the project, my new rig came in last weekend. It’s an appropriately named Mac Studio. I’m calling it Stu4 and this is the first thing I’ve published from it.
